How Radioisotopes Work

Materials:

Directions:

    1. Place a stalk of celery in colored water. Watch it for a day or two.
    2. What happens?         ANSWER: The vegetable dye moves up into the stalk of celery.
    3. If a radioisotope were used in the water instead of the dye, what could you tell by measuring or tracing it’s radiation with a Geiger counter?           ANSWER: If a radioisotope were used instead of dye, you could use a Geiger counter to measure radiation given off by the radioisotope. You could tell when the radioisotope moves up into the celery. You also could tell how fast it moves up, where it stops, and if it leaves the celery stalk. In your body, the radioisotope might stop at a place where it can treat an illness inside you.
